Adirondack Winter Photography Workshop

Adirondack Winter Photography Workshop

Held December – March

This winter wildlife photography workshop focuses on photographing Adirondack winter species in boreal forest and bog environments. This workshop is ideal if you want close, ethical wildlife encounters. Expect to come home with strong, usable photographs after this workshop, as the location is very productive.

Wildlife sightings vary throughout the winter, but some of the most consistent highlights we’ll look for include:

  • Canada jays – Often the highlight of the workshop. These intelligent, curious birds are known for approaching closely and, when comfortable, may even land on an outstretched hand, allowing for intimate portraits and behavioral images.
  • Common feeder birds – Black-capped chickadees, red-breasted nuthatch, hairy woodpeckers, blue jays, and other winter residents remain active all day and provide excellent opportunities for flight shots and natural perch photography.
  • Boreal species – Depending on conditions, we may encounter boreal species such as boreal chickadees and black-backed woodpeckers.
  • Winter finches – Species like pine grosbeaks, evening grosbeaks, crossbills, or redpolls may appear during irruption years, often feeding along bog edges or in conifers.
  • Additional wildlife – Red squirrels, snowshoe hares, pine martins, and other cold-adapted mammals are frequently encountered and make great winter subjects.

These are just a few of the highlights, and there is no guarantee of what we’ll see. Every outing is different, but Adirondack winter habitats consistently offer strong opportunities for wildlife photography.
